A scheme that allegedly involved 26 doctors, pharmacists and business owners was stopped by Orange County prosecutors and the California Department of Insurance. This scheme was allegedly organized by Tanya Moreland and Christopher King of Beverly Hills, owners of Monarch Medical Group. The defendants billed workers' compensation insurers for $40 million in claims, and have collected $23 million as a result. In addition, at least 13,000 workers' compensation claimants between 2011 and 2015 were affected by unnecessary compound medications and tests.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau as well as the FBI participated in the investigation. Allegedly 27 carriers were affected by their scheme. Physicians were paid almost $2 million in illegal kickbacks or split profits for each repackaged oral medication, compound medication or urine test. Also, the creams are not FDA approved and have not been tested for medical efficacy.
